Your responsibilities

The Manufacturing Engineering Specialist is an integral part of the Engineering Group responsible for achieving the required production output by maintaining consistent cycle times and scrap/downtime targets. This person is responsible in conjunction with the Manufacturing Engineer to develop and implement improvements to process stability, setup, tooling and documentation. The Manufacturing Engineering Specialist will work closely with Production staff to impart knowledge, best practice technique and general on-the-job-training (OJT).  The position requires flexible hours and availability across all shifts based upon need. This position requires a strong commitment to safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Maintains a safe working environment by complying with all safety and environmental policies in the workplace. Advocates for and promotes a safe work environment by reporting Near Misses and/or other safety and environmental hazards, wearing all required PPE and encouraging others to do the same.
  2. To work systematically from a list of prioritized performance issues such as Scrap and Downtime as reported each month in the QOS Performance Reports. Selected on the basis of;
    1. COPQ over time
    2. Scrap volume
    3. Unplanned Downtime
  3. To establish Root Cause of process instability using available production data and Six Sigma techniques.
    1. Observation of the current process for non-conformity
    2. Five Why process
    3. Ishikawa cause and effect analysis
    4. Statistical analysis of available production data
  4. To implement Corrective Actions.
    1. Check and Restore process settings
    2. Work with Production Support to replace worn/damaged tooling
    3. Work with Technician to replace worn/damaged machine components
    4. Work with Manufacturing Engineer on more significant process changes
    5. Document all work into Maximo work orders
    6. Create/review/revise documentation for changed/revised processes
  5. To participate in new equipment installations.
    1. OEM documentation review
    2. Initial setup and commissioning
    3. Create Internal Production documentation and setup sheets
  6. To coach and train Production staff.
    1. Correct setup after any changeover or maintenance activity
    2. Correct operation of the equipment using Best Practice methods
    3. Correct use of Tooling and Setup Sheets and information
    4. Process Optimization, offsets and running at nominal
  7. To create Operator level Work Instructions.
    1. To establish best Setup practice for the process
    2. To Standardize the setup practice and requirements for the Operator
    3. As a Training Tool for the Process Trainers
  8. To perform studies in conjunction with the Continual Improvement Engineer.
  9. To coordinate the timing and application of resources when addressing major or long standing issues, or when implementing planned improvements.
  10. To call and facilitate meetings and otherwise communicate and collaborate with others.
  11. To apply and advocate all Company Personnel Safety Policies and Standards.
  12. To apply and advocate all Company Environmental Safety Policies and Standards.
  13. To understand, apply and advocate all Company Quality Standards.
  14. Has authority to stop processes to correct quality, safety or environmental problems, identify and place suspect product on quality hold, and to promptly notify Supervisory personnel when processes become noncompliant.
  15. - Supervisory personnel have been delegated the responsibility and authority to add additional inspection steps necessary to ensure product quality when processes become noncompliant.

Education and/or Experience:                                                          

  1. Associates degree or 2 year degree in a technical field is required such as mechanical or electrical maintenance or a similarly related area; or
  2. four years’ experience operating and setting up automated machines and processes.
  3. Two years’ experience at a thyssenkrupp company in a technical role.
