With roughly 7,000 employees at 18 production sites in seven different countries, thyssenkrupp Forged Technologies has sales of over one billion euros and operates over 50 forging press lines and more than 150 machining and assembly lines in seven countries. The product portfolio includes undercarriage systems for heavy machinery as well as crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, chassis products, transmission systems and rotor shafts for the automotive industry.

Your responsibilities

The Tooling Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for the building and maintenance of machine tools as well as directing members of the tooling team in technical activities.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Improvement and repairs to induction tooling
  • Communicate with engineering and maintenance regarding tooling and fixtures

Specific Responsibilities of the Job

  • Design, building, and maintenance of machine tools, specifically continuous improvement of induction tooling designs, including the fixtures required to build them
  • Create tool drawings or outsource drawing of tools; maintain updated drawings
  • Coordinate and implement the release of engineering changes, tool modifications, and/or tool repairs to tools already in production
  • Coordinate between engineering and tool design as a technical resource to help insure that designs are considerate of both their creation and their function
  • Communicate with die shop team to address tooling issues
  • Work closely with metallurgical lab to establish effective tools
  • Work with maintenance and electrical engineering to respond quickly and appropriately to machine down situations and as those situations relate to fixtures and tooling, implement quick and permanent fixes.
  • Process decisions regarding in-housing or outsourcing of repairs
  • Write CNC operated programs
  • Track inductor log system to see status of changed out inductors and repairs made
  • Provide maintenance to inductor inventory
  • Manage broach machine tooling repair team
  • Plan, assign, and distribute work to tooling team
  • Establish priorities
  • Instruct and train in methods and procedures

Your profile

  • Education/Credentials/Certifications
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Length of Experience
    • At least 5 years of previous experience in manufacturing, with experience in machining and induction heating preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Background in tool making and machining, specifically machining parts for inductors  
    • Mechanical knowledge
    • Understanding of induction hardening and heating
    • Understanding of before and after of heat treat
    • Excellent oral and written language ability; technical language ability important
    • Excellent reasoning and problem solving ability
    • Excellent interpersonal abilities
    • Ability to lead and direct others
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office
    • Ability to use CAD/CAM design tools
    • Understanding of CNC programming
    • Above average mathematical ability
