Your responsibilities

The Structural Engineer III is a high-level production engineer responsible for receiving and executing project tasks from the lead structural engineer or other responsible engineer. They use their education, experience, and training to create structural models, and analyze complex structural steel and concrete systems, providing optimized designs. They are able to clearly communicate their engineering designs to designers for 3D modeling and 2D drafting, and produce detailed calculations.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Broad technical knowledge and skills in structural engineering.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform tasks or a sequence of tasks as part of a broader assignment with few complex features.
  • Collaborates with others and uses personal judgment to adapt methods for non-routine assignments.  Works on multiple small projects, multiple moderate projects, or portions of large projects.
  • Exercises good judgment on details of work and in application of standard methods to complete assignments.
  • Has good understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Shows initiative and independent thinking. Devises new approaches or adapts existing techniques to problems encountered.
  • Has advanced technical knowledge to properly apply industry codes and standards such as “AISC Steel Construction Manual”, “AISC Seismic Design Manual”, “International Building Code”, “ACI Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete”, and “ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures”.
  • Performs design/engineering tasks independently.
  • Fully supervises and takes responsibility for preparation of project documents/deliverables including drawings and calculations.
  • Reviews and edits specifications.
  • Identifies design/engineering problems and formulates solutions.
  • Provides technical assistance and coordinates with other project disciplines as assigned.
  • Collects data and gathers information or documents.
  • Performs investigations, and interprets data.

Your profile

Required Education:

  • BS or MS in Civil Engineering with emphasis on structural. Other disciplines may be considered based on work experience.

Desired Experience:

  • 4 years minimum civil engineering experience in the industry. MS degree may count toward 1 year of work experience.
  • Structural engineering experience in the power, petrochemical, heavy industrial, chemical plants or material handling industry is preferred. Additional industries may be considered based on experience gained.

Required Certifications & Memberships:

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT). Professional Engineering (PE) registration in progress or complete.
  • Membership in a professional organization or society is encouraged.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Checks documents within areas of expertise prepared by others such as drawings, shop drawings, specifications, and calculations.
  • Understands standard engineering workflow within the structural department.
  • Understands interdisciplinary workflows according to company procedures.
  • Acts as the responsible engineer for the procurement of simple to moderately complex engineered components/packages.
  • Proficient in the use of company engineering tools within the structural group.
  • Understands project construction methods/sequences, and may act as a Field Engineer.
  • Familiar with the standard office computer software including Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Familiar with steel fabrication processes, techniques and inspection requirements.
  • Able to observe construction/fabrication activities and note non-conformities with design/specifications, and resolve issues that arise in a professional manner.
  • May assign tasks and coordinate work of engineers, designers and administrative staff.
  • May prepare scope statements, discipline schedules and budgets for projects.
  • Plans and coordinates detailed aspects of engineering work.
  • May provide field direction based on final drawings and specifications.
